Throughout the process of peer review, my goal through the guidance of class discussion and suggestions made by our professor was to provide feedback that not only highlights the weaknesses of drafts and areas for improvement but also positive reinforcement. In this process, I provided both types of feedback from projects 1 and 2. Through that process, I learned the importance of balancing both constructive criticism and positive feedback and how it is instrumental in building an essay. Funny enough, though, I still ended up giving more positive feedback than criticism. This was because I felt like not only were my fellow students’ essays well constructed, but I also didn’t feel confident that my criticism would be effective or right. This is because our peer review happened during rough drafts where everyone hadn’t completed their essay and I didn’t want to give feedback and tell them that they were missing something when in reality they probably knew, and I also just didn’t want to seem super nitpicky. However, I still tried my best to criticize, for example, in this evidenced material I said, “I would personally go into a little more depth after this sentence. Maybe add specifically what aspects and go in-depth with those. I think you should also introduce the two authors.” The reason why I said this is because it felt like their intro needed more depth and explaining about their topic sentence, they kind of just dived into the works immediately. I also mentioned that they should introduce the authors better because our professor emphasized the importance of giving a brief but reasonable introduction that speaks to their credibility so the reader knows who they are. I also found that it was just as important to give positive feedback to let students know that I thought they did something well, I know that doing this can help boost the author’s confidence and also help them recognize what they did and possibly add more stuff like it in their essay. An example of when I gave positive feedback in this evidenced material was, “ Really good job incorporating the quotes from the texts. I also like how you incorporated your perspective at the end. Overall, this is a well-developed paragraph.” As I stated earlier, I think this is very effective because it is a positive reinforcement and highlights what they could potentially add to the rest of their essay. In conclusion, my peer review practice consists of recognizing both achievements and suggesting improvements. I learned from projects 1 to 2 and class discussions that positive feedback and criticism are essential to building an essay. It’s also important to mention that through the process of peer review, I became more comfortable, and started to provide more criticism.
